São Tomé and Príncipe

São Tomé and Príncipe is a Portuguese-speaking island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa.  It consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands: São Tomé and Príncipe, located about 140 km apart. It was named in honor of Saint Thomas by Portuguese explorers who arrived at the island on his feast day. São Tomé and Príncipe is the second-smallest African country and smallest Portuguese-speaking country.

Although São Tomé and Príncipe is a low development country, it's rich volcanic soils proved well suited to the cash crop industry. In the early 19th century, two new cash crops, coffee and cocoa, were introduced. By 1908, São Tomé had become the world's largest producer of cocoa, which remains the country's most important crop.

This is a self-painted postcard and quite fancy one. I pretty love it. It was sent from my doctor friend who also worked as a volunteer in  São Tomé and Príncipe.
