Poland is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square km, making it the 9th largest country in Europe. During World War II, millions of citizens die and buildings were destroyed. Despite the vast destruction the country experienced in World War II, Poland managed to preserve much of its cultural wealth. There are currently 14 heritage sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in Poland.
Warsaw, known in Polish as Warszawa, is the capital and largest city of Poland. In 1945 (the end of WWII), after the bombing, the revolts, the fighting, and the demolition had ended, most of Warsaw lay in ruins. The city resumed its role as the capital of Poland and the country's center of political and economic life. Many of the historic streets, buildings, and churches were restored to their original form. In 1980, Warsaw's historic Old Town was inscribed onto UNESCO's World Heritage list.
